Paragliding
Paragliding is one of the most exciting sports to practice in the Basque Country. Beautiful landscapes stretch out before our eyes while we paraglide over the Basque territory and have the chance to enjoy our environment.
For launching the pilot runs forward so that the air pressure generated by the forward movement inflates the wing. The paraglider consists of a special parachute with great suspension capacity. Like in hang gliding, weather conditions are very important while paragliding.
The Basque Country is rich in fantastic places where to practice paragliding. Some of them are Sopelana, Getxo, the sides of Talaimendi (Zarautz) and Ulia (Donostia-San Sebastián), as well as some zones of the Low Bidasoa and Orduña. In these places we will find clubs and associations that provide us all the necessary material to fly: Tura Kirol Abentura, Naturlan, La Escuela Vasca de Parapente (Basque Paragliding School), Ertz, La Escuela de Vuelo Bidasoa (Bidasoa Flight Centre), Urruti Sport and José Mateos company.

This association consists of firms that implement active tourism and adventure sports in the Basque Country. The organisation aims to spread the different possibilities that this type of tourism offers. The 16 firms making up Aktiba facilitate the access to natural landscapes by means of practising climbing, abseiling, paintball, canoeing and kayaking, canyoning, speleology, multi-adventures, bungee jumping, diving, surfing, hiking, MTB and sailing. As an employers' association Aktiba arranges training courses, teaches regulations, provide information on quality processes and all the necessary material to improve active tourism in the Basque Country.
Aizkolaritza (tree hacking or log sawing)
Aizkolaris are those who saw logs with an ax. This is a traditional Basque sport that requires much strength and precision and its practice derives from the typical farmer's duties.
Aizkolaris, or "log sawyers or hackers", make bets among them. Some conditions are agreed, according to the kind of wood, and the amount and thickness of the logs to saw.
These challenges become important events for fans. They bet for their favourite "aizkolari" and so emotion gets higher until the contest ends.

Tour of the Basque Country
Once again, Basque roads turn into the settings for six intense days full of emotion. As usual, the thrilling tour will be divided into six stages in which the riders must climb demanding mountain passes leaving endless towns of our geography behind. The route has still not been defined, although it has been announced that the first stage will start and finish in Zierbena. As to the final time trial stage, it will be the same as in 2008: the ascent to Aia. It should also be noted that stage four concludes in the Sanctuary of Arrasate.
We are about to enjoy some of the most outstanding riders of these days again. This is, in short, an event of worldwide repercussion. A meeting that cycling enthusiasts cannot miss.
