The present Basilica of Santa María del Coro dates back to the 18th Century but it was built over an old temple, thatýs why it is considered the oldest church in the city. It presents Gothic, Churrigueresque and Neo-classical elements and its portico is of Plateresque style. Saint Sebastian appears twice, in an sculpture located in the facade and on a painting by Luis Boccia placed in the altar presided by the Virgen del Coro, patron saint of the city.
The legend has it that the virginýs little image was placed in the churchýs choir and a clergyman, tired of going up the stairs to revere it, tried to take it home hiding it under his cassock. When he got to the door he couldnýt move, he was immobilised. Thatýs why the image was placed in the main altarpiece.
Every August 14, apart from the visit to the church, the visitor can enjoy the music of the prestigious Orfeón Donostiarra choir, which sings the traditional Salve.
